PERMISSIONS / COPYRIGHT
It is the author’s responsibility
to ensure adequate copyright permissions have been obtained.
Most, if not all, published materials will be subject
to copyright. This includes both printed matter and
anything you may find on the worldwide web. It is of
course also common courtesy and a good principle to
seek copyright permission for anything you plan to quote
from and reproduce in your text.
The way to seek copyright permission is to write to
the publisher(s) of the pieces you want to reproduce.
Tell them what it is you want to reproduce from their
publication, how you plan to use it in your publication
(i.e. describe what your book is about, what it consists
of and how the piece(s) from their publication would
be used), and how many copies of your book you plan
to have printed (you don’t need to be exact about
this, they’ll just be interested to know if you’re
thinking of 1,000+ or 10,000+).
The publishers of some Bible translations give limited
(but commonly adequate) permission to reproduce from
their Scripture text without your needing to write to
them personally. Look on the print history / copyright
page of the Bible version(s) you wish to quote from.
If in doubt, contact the publisher anyway.
