Typesetting and Proofs
When your manuscript is ready,
with all copy preparation and any editorial work completed,
we arrange for it to be typeset – transformed
into the pages of a book. This requires considerable
design skill and expertise using sophisticated computer
software. Typestyles are selected, headings placed in
position, margins set, page numbers added – and
the entire contents has to fit within a multiple of
16 pages in finished form (minimum total 64) for the
printing process (see
Printing and Binding – Number of pages).
Typesetting is a bespoke operation for each title, combining
the client’s preferences for typestyle etc with
our professional design and typesetting skills, working
within all necessary technical parameters and resulting
in a custom-made finished, typeset text that looks its
best and at the same time fits a required multiple of
pages as neatly as possible. This whole procedure is
made much easier and more cost effective if you have
followed the information noted under ‘How
to Prepare Your Manuscript’ – please
do read this.
All our text typesetting is carried out by experienced
professionals who understand the issues involved, and
the pitfalls to avoid.
This ensures that your text will be well presented and
without distractions for the reader, and also that it
will work technically at the printer.
Before typesetting commences we show you samples of
different typestyles and page designs for you to choose
between or indicate any particular preferences. When
typesetting is complete we send you proofs of the typeset
pages for you to carefully check and return to us. Any
corrected pages will be shown to you for final approval
as required, and then the text is made ready for the
printer.
