Text illustrations and photos
Simple black line drawings may
be scanned in and incorporated into the text at a modest
extra cost per item. Photos, or illustrations with pencil
shading, might require a little more treatment but can
also be printed in black & white on the text paper
quite economically, and with adequate results (this
method is often chosen by publishers). Please mark in
the manuscript the approximate position of each illustration
or photo to print in the text, number each one, and
mark whether it is to be full-page or half-page etc.
Any photos or illustrations to be printed in colour
– or any black
& white photos or illustrations
where quality reproduction is paramount – are
all grouped together as a ‘plate section’
for printing on smooth art paper separately from the
text. This section is bound into the book with the text
pages at the final stages of manufacturing.
Typically such a plate section would consist of four
or eight pages, and could print in full colour or as
black & white. We would design the pages to accommodate
your pictures, inserting captions as required, and show
you a proof for approval. Such a ‘plate section’
provides for colour inside the book, and for best quality
reproduction, but it does add significantly to the cost.
For an indication of cost for either method of including
pictures inside the book, please fill in the relevant
boxes on the cost estimate request form. Unless agreed
otherwise and quoted for, our assumption is that the
client will supply all photos and illustrations to be
included in the text.
Unless a plate section or colour printing is specifically
ordered, we will assume that any photos or illustrations
supplied for the text are for printing in black &
white on the text paper, even if the original pictures
themselves are in colour.
Finally, please remember that all photos or illustrations
you supply should of course be as sharp as possible
and to best available quality. If supplied digitally
they should ideally be high resolution JPEGs or TIFFs.
