Cover design
Whether it’s for a paperback
or a hardback, good cover design can be crucial to the
sales success of a book – it really does make
a difference. We can provide for you the same expertise
that goes into high quality cover designs for books
for leading publishers, from classic style to the most
contemporary, drawing on our range of top flight freelance
designers and international image sources. For the vast
majority of books we produce we also provide the cover
design, but always in close consultation with the client.
We start by discussing what you, the client, have in
mind, and as part of our service (and depending on your
requirements) we will provide a range of alternative,
high quality, front cover design visuals for you to
choose from – all in full colour and to finished
standard. Naturally we allow for making some changes,
if you wish, to the particular design you choose. We
always work hard to achieve what you want, and as the
client you always have the final say.
When the front cover design is decided, and we know
the number of text pages in the finished book (so we
can calculate the spine width), we go on to complete
the cover artwork using your back cover wording, make
and insert a barcode if you have an ISBN, and show you
a proof for approval.
If you wish to supply a photo or illustration yourself
for use on the front or back cover we will be pleased
to work with it, provided there are no technical problems.
Any picture supplied for this purpose should of course
be as high quality/high resolution as possible.
We are also happy to work from client’s own front
cover artwork if requested, subject to any technical
requirements. We recommend that in the first instance
you supply your proposed artwork to us as a PDF or colour
laser print for our reference, and we can then advise
you further.
Cover design and printing is based on full colour (‘4-colour
process’). Striking designs in less than ‘full’
colour, e.g. black & white or similar, can also
be provided but there is no saving in cost as full colour
is the standard at most cover printers and therefore
quite economical.
Special cover processes and finishes are available at
extra cost
if requested, e.g. embossing, foil-blocking, matt lamination,
but without further considerable expense these cannot
be shown in advance of the actual finished product so
are not recommended if the client is at all unsure!
We believe that in practice our cover designs are sufficiently
effective so as not to need such extras,
but they are available if the customer requires.
